It seems to me that objects here can be carried in the most interesting ways. I have seen live chickens and ducks carried in sacks and fire wood and plumbing pipes placed on top of heads. It seems to me people would sooner place a shopping bag of groceries on top of their heads rather than carry it with their hands. Even though these sightings now no longer shock me, they still leave me with a sense of wonder. My brief observation of this Tanzanian culture is that people here carry a lot of burdens, which can be metaphorical but often physical in nature too and all I can say is that I admire the physicality and ingenuity that I see displayed all around me.
